AKZONOBEL, AXALTA IN MERGER TALKS

AkzoNobel and Axalta Coating Systems have confirmed they are in talks to merge into a $30-billion per year manufacturing entity. AkzoNobel on October 30 issued a short statement on the topic, and added that its previously revealed plan to spin off its Specialty Chemicals business is proceeding as planned.

HUNTSMAN-CLARIANT MERGER OFF

AKZONOBEL ANNOUNCES THIRD QUARTER RESULTS

AkzoNobel has released its third-quarter earnings. Volumes were up by two percent in the quarter over last year, the company says, led by its Performance Coatings segment, while revenue was also marginally up by one percent, or 3.62-billion euros (US $4.27-billion), as against 3.6-billion in 2016.

SEISMICALLY RESISTANT CONCRETE COATING

AXALTA BUYS PLASCOAT SYSTEMS

Axalta Coating Systems has acquired Plascoat Systems Ltd. a supplier of thermoplastic powder coatings, from its parent company, International Process Technologies (IPT) Ltd. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

DOW-DUPONT DEAL SET TO CLOSE

Chemicals giants The Dow Chemical Co. (Midland, Michigan) and DuPont (Wilmington, Delaware) have revealed that all required regulatory approvals and clearances have now been received, signaling a culmination date for the two companies’ merger.

ENBRIDGE STARTS PIPELINE COATING PROJECT

Energy giant Enbridge Inc. has commenced work on a $6.5-billion project that will replace over 1,000 miles of its Line 3, a crude oil pipeline the company says is at risk for corrosion due to failures in its protective coating.

L.V. LOMAS BOUGHT BY DUTCH COMPANY

HUNTSMAN-CLARIANT MERGER REPORTED ON TRACK

Clariant (Muttenz, Switzerland) and Huntsman International LLC (The Woodlands, TX) have presented a shareholder update on their proposed merger. Huntsman also recently announced an initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange for Venator, a subsidiary company that makes resins and curing agents.

DOW CORNING INTRODUCES SLIP ADDITIVE

The Dow Chemical Co. has introduced a new-generation silicone slip additive that it says offers optimal compatibility with modern and traditional waterborne wood-coating binders. Dow Corning 210S Additive is designed to improve the mar and abrasion resistance and anti-blocking performance of waterborne wood coatings, while reducing the tendency for surface cratering.

DOW-DUPONT MERGER PASSES MILESTONE

While the deal still needs Canadian and and Mexican approval, the $130-billion merger between chemical giants Dow Chemical Co. and DuPont has provisional approval in the US.

NACE ACQUIRES MPI

NACE International Institute (NII) has acquired the Master Painters Institute (MPI), the primary paint performance certification organization in North America. In this new partnership, NII and MPI aim to provide a single source for information on architectural and industrial coatings.

AXALTA COMPLETES VALSPAR PURCHASE

Axalta Coating Systems' purchase of Valspar Corp.'s North American Wood Coatings business is completed. The purchase price was $420-million.

PPG ABANDONS AKZONOBEL BID

PPG has decided not to pursue its merger efforts with AkzoNobel any further at this time. It is also not pursuing the option of a hostile takeover.

VALSPAR ACQUISITION GREEN-LIGHTED

Sherwin-Williams Co. has received regulatory approval from both the US Federal Trade Commission and the Canadian Competition Bureau to complete its acquisition of Valspar Corp.

AXALTA BUYS SPENCER COATINGS GROUP

Axalta Coatings Group has entered an agreement to acquire the Spencer Coatings Group, a British manufacturer of industrial coatings for heavy-duty equipment, general industrial, oil and gas, and glass coatings segments.

HUNTSMAN AND CLARIANT PLAN MERGER

While the joining of DuPont and Dow Chemical Co., along with PPG's efforts to merge with AkzoNobel have been the most noticeable fusions of chemicals giants on the horizon, a third proposal has now arrived. Texas-based Huntsman Corp. and Clariant (Muttenz, Switzerland) announced on May 22 that they planned to merge into a business entity with anticipated annual sales exceeding $13-billion.

BIOCIDE-FREE PAINTS

Clariant is offering easily applied, biocide-free mineral paints that use the stabilizers Dispersogen SPS and Dispersogen SPG. These, the company says, lead to better handling properties of mineral paints.

The Aluminum Extruders Council (AEC) and the Aluminum Association have released their estimates of aluminum extrusion shipments in North America by major market for 2014. PPG EXPANDS WUPPERTAL FACILITY

PPG Industries recently completed a US$5-million expansion at its coatings manufacturing facility in Wuppertal, Germany. INORGANIC BLUE USES NEW CHEMISTRY

A new pigment - YInMn blue – that was discovered by accident by Oregon State University chemists, will enter the marketplace later this year. Researchers say it has no toxic ingredients, and be used in a wide range of coatings and plastics. It is being marketed by The Shepherd Color Co.

IHEA FALL BUSINESS CONFERENCE

The Fall Business Conference of the Industrial Heating Equipment Association will be held on Tuesday & Wednesday, September 1 & 2, at the Hilton Columbus Downtown, following the IHEA fall seminars in Columbus, OH. SOLVAY OPENS ALKOXYLATION PLANTS

Solvay has begun commercial output at two new large-scale, ‘on-pipe’ alkoxylation facilities in Moerdijk, the Netherlands, and in Singapore. Both units are located in integrated petrochemical hubs and receive ethylene oxide via dedicated pipelines, for a wide range of specialty surfactants made by Solvay’s Novecare business.

Al Mordy of Cloverdale Paint passes on

Al Mordy, who was president of Cloverdale Paint Inc. (Surrey, BC) died on June 4 after a short illness and ensuing complications.
